In keeping with my crazy for cactus phase
it was great fun to entertain some friends with a casual patio party
The patio turned into a Cactus Cantina!
It featured a watermelon flowering cactus
Cactus tidbit plates were ready for filling with tasty appetizers
It’s always a good idea to serve simple nibbles too
Flowers and cacti were everywhere along with my rusty amigo
I made the Cantina sign a few years ago for a Fiesta we hosted
A colorful flower girl stood by the kitchen door
Solar cactus lights
They come on like magic when darkness falls
There was a pitcher full of refreshing mojitos
I love to use this tilted pitcher for flowers too
We had a lot of festive fun, even live music provided by our fiddling friend, Leo
The watermelon cactus was created with long toothpicks
securing zucchini, limes and Brussels sprouts
Flowers were placed in holes made with a screwdriver
Cut a thin slice off the bottom of melon so it will stand firmly
Figure out how you want to place the extra pieces
Poke holes with a small awl or screwdriver
Then secure the additional pieces
A combination of green fruits and vegetables mimic the bumpy cacti look
The flowers loved drinking the watemelon juice and stayed fresh for over 24 hours
You can add cactus “prickles” with additional toothpicks inserted all over the fruit and vegetables if you want to make it look even more like a cactus
